Dr. Steve Thomas

Dr. Thomas is the fourth President of Midland College, assuming that post on August 15, 2008. He came to Midland from Vernon, Texas, where he served as President of Vernon College.

He received his B.A. degree from Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas; his Master’s Degree from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin; and his Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

His first involvement with community colleges was as a psychology instructor at Midland College. He served as Dean of Academic Affairs at Lexington Community College in Lexington, KY, as Dean of Instructional Services at Victoria College in Victoria, Texas, and for 8 years as President of Vernon College in Vernon, Texas.

Dr. Thomas was appointed to the Community College Formula Advisory Committee by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He is a member of the Texas Association of Community Colleges and the Texas Community College Teachers Association. Dr. Thomas has served as chair of a Texas statewide committee on core curriculum, as well as chair of the South Texas Higher Education Regional Council, and as a member of the Texas Association of Community Colleges Executive Committee, Legislative Affairs Committee, and P-16 Committee. Dr. Thomas has also served as a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Peer Review Committees.  Locally, he serves as an Ex-Officio for the Midland Chamber of Commerce Board (chair-elect, 2011-12; chairman, 2012-13) and has served on the Board for the Boy Scouts of America.

Dr. Thomas was named Distinguished Alumnus from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and received the Distinguished Graduate Award from the University of Texas at Austin, College of Education.
